Kirkwall Bay offers easy access and plenty of shelter from the swell and exposure of the Atlantic and North Sea while still providing interesting shorelines to explore. Expect to be followed by curious common seals and sea birds.
Include a trip to Thieves Holm to experience a taste of some tidal flow in a safe environment. It is also a good base for heading north to Shapinsay or to simply have a cup of tea on the shore alongside the seals and cormorants!
In the summer months sightings of harbor porpoise, dolphins and even orca are not uncommon.
